Lips come in all kinds of shapes and colour, and while it’s important your lips are proportionate to your other facial features, a lot of women – and some men – would like to have bigger lips.

Well-defined and voluminous lips are truly sought-after with lip enhancement procedures increasing rapidly in the past few years.

While lip augmentations used to be popular for women in their 40s and 50s as lips tend to become smaller with age, nowadays, especially young women in their 20s and 30s are looking to achieve the ‘perfect pout’.

Undoubtedly, this trend was greatly influenced by reality TV star Kylie Jenner when she confessed to having had lip fillers back in 2014. Some clinics in the US saw a 70% increase in enquiries about lip fillers after.

While most women desire more natural looking lips than Kylie Jenner’s, the demand for full lips is still high.

At Dr Warwick Nettle, we offer both surgical and non-surgical treatment options to enhance your lips depending on the result you are after:

Lip Fillers:

This is the most common and fastest way to add volume to lips as it is non-surgical. A soft filler product is injected into your lips (local anaesthetics are available) to increase the volume and define the shape of your lips. It is a relatively quick procedure usually not taking longer than 20 to 30 minutes, and the results can be seen instantaneously.

The volume can be controlled by the amount of product that is injected. Light swelling and bruising can be expected, but usually subside after a couple of days. Fillers can last for up to 12 months, although this varies greatly depending on the patient’s metabolism and the amount injected.

If a patient is unhappy with the result, there is the option to dissolve the filler through the injection of a dissolving agent, therefore, it is a low-risk procedure.

Lip Fat Transfer:

In this procedure, fat is taken from one part of the body and injected into the lips. It is necessary to over inject the lips with more fat than you wan’t/require as not all the fat establishes a blood supply, which means some of the fat injected will not stay. Sometimes it can be necessary to have this procedure done 1 – 3 times to get the effect you are after. As it is your own fat that is transferred, there is no risk of an adverse reaction as opposed to implants or fillers. This procedure requires a few days of downtime, but the results are longer lasting than fillers, in some cases they are even permanent.

Lip Lift:

In this procedure, the upper lip is lifted through incisions that are made beneath the nose. This is suited for lips that are ‘folded in’ and don’t necessarily need more volume, but a reshaping. While a lip lift needs to be performed in hospital, the results are permanent.
