The Procedure

A chin implant can be used to balance the proportions of the face. A chin implant is most often used if you have a small lower jaw. An implant can also be used to compensate for a large nose and to help it appear smaller. A wide range of chin implant shapes and sizes are available to suit your particular needs.

A chin implant can be an isolated procedure or combined with other facial surgery. The chin implant is inserted via an incision under the chin crease or through an incision in the mouth. The surgery is performed as a day-stay procedure under general anaesthesia.

The Recovery

After a chin implant procedure you should be up and about on the same day and back at work within a week. Bruising and swelling is minimal. There is generally little pain associated with the chin implant procedure.

FAQS

There is no ideal age for chin implant surgery, however, as your facial features are growing throughout adolescence, it is recommended to wait until the age of around 18 or older.

Chin implant surgery is performed in a private, accredited hospital under general anaesthetic with a qualified anaesthetist and usually take approximately 1 hour. You can go home the same day but will require someone to pick you up to care for you at least overnight and take you to your post-op appointments.

Chin implants are made of malleable but firm solid silicone (to imitate bone). They do not leak or break down. They are designed to last a lifetime but can be removed if desired.

A small incision is usually made under the chin.

There are no Medicare rebates as chin implant surgery is considered a cosmetic procedure.

As with almost all surgery, moderation is the key to a natural-looking result. While a moderate increase in chin size may be aesthetically beneficial, a very large increase can look artificial and disharmonious. Dr Nettle always strives for natural-looking results in chin implant surgery, and so will carefully assess you to determine the correct chin implant shape and size for your requirements.

Correct positioning of the chin implant is important, as they are designed to stay in one position and not move.

There are non-surgical filler injections that can make a difference to the shape of the face, but are only temporary. Chin implants remain the most effective, permanent solution.

Yes, Dr Nettle uses a morphing program to be able to give you an idea of the result you can achieve.
